By distancing itself from the current dominance of the ontological interpretation of Stimmung, this article explicates another tradition of understanding Stimmung as a decisively modern category. Two modernities of Stimmung are then offered—a compensational and a confrontational—whereby the article traces the second kind in the writings of Georg Simmel and Emil Staiger. Central is the aesthetic paradigm of music, which forms the basis for a specific relation to the material world. The article ultimately argues that Stimmung is a contribution to a current discussion of the material state of modernity.
