In Remembering Elizabeth Bishop, an oral biography assembled by Gary Fountain and Peter Brazeau, the literary critic David Kalstone recalls a conversation with Bishop in which he praised her poem “In the Waiting Room,” noting that the first occurrence of the word “inside” in the following sentence “allowed you to think of the aunt inside and something coming from inside Elizabeth herself” as well:
