ABSTRACT Narrating the process of directing a performance almost entirely at a distance of 1600 miles, “Dance at a Distance” describes my ongoing interactions with the performers throughout the process. Specifically, I focus on how the development of harmony among the cast helped to mitigate the uncertainty and the significant communicative challenges of our circumstance. I use this experience to uncover a more intimate understanding of the larger process of creating and teaching ensemble performance, with implications beyond the scope of this particular production.
