ABSTRACT Galactic Tours is a 94-page, large format book with full colour illustrations, a collaboration between the Belfast science fiction author Bob Shaw and the English space artist David Hardy. By the time the book appeared in 1981, Shaw had left Belfast to escape the Troubles, but this article attempts to appraise the text through the prism of Irish Studies, tracing local sources for the descriptions of Shaw’s fantastical worlds. The article proposes that Irish science fiction is a fertile area for Irish Studies, producing as it does texts that take part in a globalised culture, while estranging aspects of Irish society, looking to the past to create its futures.
