The work of the Portable Antiquities Scheme (PAS) has been highlighted in this journal since 2005, and an introduction to the scheme can be found in previous reports. In 2017, 15,955 objects dating to the post-medieval and modern periods were recorded by the PAS in 14,260 records. This represented 20% of all objects recorded: a 14% decrease in objects, and a 2% decrease in proportion, from 2016. The major functional categories (calculated by object) were: currency (coins and tokens) (34%), dress accessories (23%), arms and armour (6%), trade equipment (including jettons) (11%), vessels (5%), animal (including equestrian) equipment (4%), household fittings (4%), tools and utensils (3%), and entertainment and leisure (4%). In the report for 2015 we noted a change in guidance whereby the PAS was being more selective in recording material datable after 1540, and the reasons for it. Of course, more recent artefacts of local importance continue to be recorded by the Finds Liaison Officers (FLOs), as do items of Treasure. From the above statistics it appears that the decrease in numbers of post-medieval and modern objects recorded mostly reflects a general decline in overall quantities recorded in 2017. The decline in the proportion of finds recorded which are post-medieval or modern is slight, and not clearly significant. The types of objects, as seen in the functional categories, appear similar to last year (2016). As ever, many finds recorded in 2017 are both noteworthy and provide potential for further research, into the objects and their context, and a few are highlighted and discussed here. Further PAS finds will be discussed in a short note by Alex Bliss, published in the next issue of this journal, which considers a newly identified verification centre for lead weights and some of the stamps employed there. This is particularly gratifying since in the first report of the PAS in this journal the late Geoff Egan highlighted the potential of Scheme data to elucidate regional variation in lead weights.
