The Islamic Baydha Project, Baydha (Petra Region), season 2018

In September/December 2018, the Islamic Baydha Project has carried on its fifth season of a project of archaeological excavations at the Islamic Baydha village (Khirbet Baydha). The project, directed by Micaela Sinibaldi and affiliated with the Council for British Research in the Levant, in season 2018 had a duration of six weeks of fieldwork (15 September to 25 October) and eight weeks of study season (27 October to 22 December). The grant awarded by the Palestine Exploration Fund was, as for every other season, absolutely essential for carrying on the fieldwork this year, in particular to support a study season. The grant has been important to support living and transport expenses for team members, as well as the cost of a study season. The Islamic Baydha Project is generously co-funded since its first season by the Barakat Trust and the Palestine Exploration Fund. During the 2018 season, one trench has been opened in one of the two mosques of the village (Mosque 1), which are a rare architectural feature in Petra. Results include the complete mapping of the structure, which has now been completely exposed, and the collection of finds from the surfaces of occupation of the building. The complete excavation of Mosque 1 to the level of the floor, previously excavated by the Islamic Baydha Project (2015–2017), has confirmed the presence of at least two earlier building phases, as already recorded in former seasons, with traces of an earlier building found under the eastern wall in season 2018. This aspect may have influenced the final proportions of the mosque, which are close to those of a square (about 7.50 × 7.50 m). The other interesting find in this structure were further remains of red-painted plaster, not only, as previously recorded, in the mihrab and along the western wall of the mosque, but also along the eastern wall, which demonstrates that the whole mosque was probably decorated in this way during its second phase of use. Traces of collapsed plaster are also around the columns and the pillars supporting the arches, therefore demonstrating that these elements were also covered in plaster. This season we discovered a platform in the NE corner of the mosque, which was originally constructed with the first floor of the mosque, and whose function is at this moment still not clearly understood. Mosque 1 has now been completely excavated internally to the level of the floors (Figure 1), but the part north of the entrance, which may have consisted of a courtyard, remains unexcavated, and some external parts of the mosque elevations remain still unrecorded due to the unexcavated parts. The chronology of the mosque can be framed within the Middle to Late Islamic period.
