Norwegian Archaeological Review (NAR) has now turned 50 years. It has long since found it’s place in the archaeological academic environment and established a large international network. When celebrating an anniversary it is customary to look back and review progress and developments. When the journal marked its 40th anniversary in 2008, Hein Bjerck, then editor-in-chief, presented a study of the contents of the first 40 volumes to reflect on trends in topics as well as for example nationality and gender of the authors (Bjerck 2008). The same volume also contained an interview with Bjørn Myhre, commenting on the development of the journal (Myhre et al. 2008), as well as interviews with Ian Hodder and Ruth Tringham concerning theoretical and methodological developments in the discipline during those 40 years (Hodder et al. 2008, Tringham et al. 2008). Following up on this, the retrospective belowwill acknowledge some changes and continuities across the 50 years before turning around and contemplating the future. At 50 the journal is still vigorous, eager to participate in current debates and to consider future trends and directions.
