Mark Haughton’s attention to the negotiation of identities at the local scale, emphasis on age and gender as key dimensions of Early Bronze Age identities, and focus on the ideological character of mortuary practices in this article are all admirable. Yet, I find his focus on just one scale of analysis problematic. In the following comments I will grapple with the question of scales of analysis most closely, suggesting that the approach Haughton sets out can only provide one part of an effective approach.
