ABSTRACT The aim of this research is to investigate residents’ intention of participating in financing for tourism by exploring sub-dimensions of resident empowerment, perceived personal economic benefit, and perceived negative impacts of tourism in their community. Based on this study, theoretical and empirical evidence of the relations among the six constructs are presented. Using structural equation modeling with the sample of residents from a rural tourist site, the results indicate that psychological empowerment has significant direct impacts on intention of participating in financing for tourism. Social and psychological empowerment has significant direct impacts on perceived personal economic benefit. Sub-dimensions of resident empowerment are negatively related to perceived negative impacts. Perceived personal economic benefit and perceived negative impacts are positively/negatively related to intention of participating in financing for tourism respectively. Finally, theoretical and practical implications, and limitations of this research are analyzed within the rural tourist site.
