The little variation that is allowed into this book is brushed aside as the pathogenic force of modernity or seen as inconsequential because we are so cosmopolitan that it is impossible to know “who is the Orientalist and who is Orientalized” (p. 184), which is precisely the supposedly “Post-Orientalist reading” that the author began with in Chapter 1. This book has hardly closed this topic. Future anthropologists of Asia will likely provide their informants with more of a voice within their ethnography, the diversity of which will provide a more robust and convincing argument to move us beyond the critique of Orientalism.
