Syed Badrul Ahsan

The latter part of the book deals with the 1857 Great Mutiny. Hickman attributes its causes more to the effects of evangelical missionaries and the Doctrine of Lapse (under Governor-General Dalhousie) rather than the increased presence in India of European women. At all events, it was a horrific episode, and the massacres of British women and children make almost unbearable reading. Many of the women who survived were true heroines, and some told their stories in graphic detail. The advent of direct rule, known as The Raj, brought the British memsahib into greater prominence as hierarchy and protocol replaced the freewheeling days of ‘John Company’ and its frequently amoral nabobs.
