The core message of this book by Nobel prize-winners is that current macro studies of developmental theories and practices increasingly make us “emptier” since most theories, being generalized evaluations in studies in poverty reduction and upward social mobility, fail to examine context-based verifications and evidence. This work, written with sound care, conforms to the findings of another Nobel Laureate, Angus Deaton of Harvard, who has cautioned that field experiments should be designed carefully to shed light on why a method worked and where else it might work. In the same vein, this book argues, for example, that remedial instruction in India had measurable benefits for weaker students, but further studies demonstrated that remedial education seemed to be unworkable as resources varied.
