Understanding the experiences of Latina former student athletes pursuing graduate education: The role of ethnic identity and emotional intelligence

ABSTRACT Educational leaders, inclusive of faculty, are charged now more than ever with understanding the challenges and needs of their diverse student body, ensuring that they are prepared for their chosen career post-graduation. This study sought to better understand and explore the experiences of five Latina former NCAA student-athletes who made the choice to pursue graduate education. This study aimed to further understand how ethnic identity development occurred in Latina student-athletes and how this experience impacted their pursuit of graduate education. To better understand the phenomenon of ethnic-identity development in Latina student-athletes, the concept of emotional intelligence was utilized. The current study found three overarching themes: Self-Confidence, Greater Understanding of Self (Race and Ethnicity), and Motivation. This study presents implications and recommendations for educational leaders who work with student-athletes who self-identify as Latino/a who are considering attending graduate school.
