The enthronement of Emperor Reiwa generated great public interest which has only recently subsided. About half a century has passed between the birth of Emperor Reiwa and his enthronement. I believe that these 50 years have been a major turning point in modern Japanese history. Speaking from recent experience, I believe that the Japanese people are becoming more and more gracious. Let me share a personal story. When I board a train carrying a cane, 80% of the time the person sitting in front of me will give up his or her seat for me. This can be quite tricky. Everyone is tired, which is why people are sitting down. Even I might potentially be more energetic than a healthy person who is seated. However, if you casually decline the offer, it creates an awkward situation and puts the person who offered the seat in a difficult position. Saying, “I see … ” the person will move somewhere else. So, I have decided to play the part of someone shameless, quickly taking the seat, and loudly voicing my appreciation. When you do that, the world remains a harmonious place. I think that these types of customs have been formed in the last few decades and will likely become established. In this article, I would like to outline reasons for my view that Japan is becoming a better and better country.
