ecclesiology—unity, holiness, catholicity and apostolicity to be expressed through musicking. The concept of spirituality was liberated from its religious framework in the first chapter; in the final chapter, Boyce-Tillman presents the religious framework as transformed and redefined, shedding new light on the potential of musicking, and the spiritual now resumes its place as the transcendent experience. June Boyce-Tillman has mounted a well-substantiated case for her perhaps utopic view of the potential for musical engagement to subvert the dominant paradigm of individualism in western society and build community, connectedness and cultural understanding, and restore to humanity a vital spirituality that can have validity outside a religious frame. Experiencing Music—Restoring the Spiritual is dense with ideas, and is strongly recommended for those interested in formations of spirituality in music, and in the use of music to promote individual and societal well-being.
