Introduction. Zazie@60: consécration culturelle in the Anglophone and Francophone worlds

In this Introduction, we will outline how Raymond Queneau’s novel Zazie dans le métro (1959) was received during 1959, the early 1960s and over the course of the last decades. Our attention will focus on how the Anglophone world reacted initially to Zazie in the original French, but then increasingly to Zazie in Louis Malle’s film adaptation in 1960 and to Zazie in translation. It is also instructive to remind ourselves, as background to the controversial cultural export that Zazie would become, of the response of critics and commentators in France. We will also assess the resurgence of interest in Zazie across a range of pluridisciplinary and interdisciplinary contexts. These analyses will finally point us towards reasons for the novel’s enduring legacy, and towards the strands of enquiry into Zazie that figure in this current ‘anniversary’ Special issue. Raymond Queneau (1903–76) was a polymathic figure in French literary circles during the mid-twentieth century. He was a novelist, poet, critic and mathematician. After an uneventful early life (university in Paris, military service), he joined the publishing house Gallimard as a reader in 1938. While at Gallimard, he edited and published Alexandre Kojève’s lectures on Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit (Queneau had been a student of Kojève during the 1930s). In 1950 he entered the Collège de Pataphysique—founded in 1948 to progress the science of imaginary solutions—which would prove critical in his intellectual and literary development, and by 1960, he had co-founded the Ouvroir de littérature potentielle (Oulipo). However, it is as an author that Queneau came to prominence in France with the publication of essentially two texts. The first was Exercices de style (1947) which tells the simple story of a man seeing the same stranger twice in one day. The basic anecdote is re-told in ninety-nine different ways, demonstrating the variety of styles in which storytelling can take place, sometimes as parodies. The second work was Zazie dans le métro (1959), a popular classic narrating the adventures of a girl called Zazie during a visit to her uncle in Paris. Zazie would become the most celebrated of Queneau’s novels. Adapted for cinema in 1960 by New Wave film director Louis Malle (1932–95), and despite its apparent easy readability and humorous tone, the novel is notoriously complex, mixing social and political satire, philosophical commentary, linguistic analysis, and literary game-playing. Zazie the novel is translated into many languages and the film is now widely available on DVD.
