from the vicissitudes of global capital flows and markets? How might their forms reveal a different constellation of anxieties and anxiety management? In my opening paragraph, I described Fictitious Capital as a welcome addition to Arabic nahd a studies. It is that, and much more. It is a text that transcends disciplinary boundaries to bring nineteenth century Arabic novels into a broader conversation with scholarship in material culture, Victorian literature, economic theory, historiography, and capital. It reminds us that texts are deeply embedded in their presents, and play a central role in working out some of the contradictions of their times, especially in turbulent eras. Fiction, in content and form, is a responsive and generative cultural actor, and scholarship cannot but be enriched by an approach such as this one that steadily and skillfully weaves these multiple threads. As such, Fictitious Capital offers to be both a model and a blueprint for future research in Arabic literary studies and beyond.
