Cathy J. Schlund-Vials

What follows is familiar to those who earned—by way of familial affiliation and location—the designation “military brat”: my father, Charles Raymond Schlund, was a Chief Master Sargent (CMSGT) in the United States Air Force. His “over there” assignments involved militarized coordinates in western Europe, stations in north and southeast Asia, and bases in the southern United States. These deployments refracted the far reaches and distanced sites of the “Cold War”; and, it was because of my father’s line of military work that the Schlunds (comprised of mother, father, and boy-girl twins) in part came “to be.” Born in Udon Thani Province (Thailand), just outside Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base during the Second Indochina War, I, along with my twin brother, were serendipitously adopted and soon-after relocated to St. Patrick Air Force Base (in northern Florida). Four years later, in 1978, we crossed the Atlantic and lived on Leakenheath Royal Air Force Base (in Suffolk, England). Consistent with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) coalitional politics, my American father loaded munitions onto British planes headed to the Falkland Islands. In 1983, during the U.S. invasion of Grenada, we returned stateside to Moody Air Force Base (in Valdosta, Georgia). It was here that my father’s Air Force livelihood ended: as “career military,” my father served 30 years; standard operating procedure dictated retirement. At age 48, Charles Schlund reentered civilian life as a logistics analyst at Lockheed Martin in Austin, Texas. Concomitant with my father’s 1985 “rebirth,”my mother, brother, and I would cease to be military dependents and instead became—for better or worse— transplanted Texans and resettled “Austinites.”

而且,由于我父亲的军事工作,Schlunds(由母亲,父亲和男孩女孩双胞胎组成)在某种程度上“成为了”。
