This special issue began as a panel at the 2016 convention of theModern Language Association. A conversation that began as an early morning conference presentation feels present in ways we could not anticipate at the time. Between then and now, theUnited States has witnessed the ascendance of right-wing populist leaders both at home and abroad, a series of high-profile domestic terror attacks rooted in white supremacist nationalism, and the #metoo movement’s insistence on the pervasive and quotidian nature of sexual violence. These events remind us not only of the violence of our particular moment, but of violence’s persistent recurrence and the fearful prospects of its futures. It seems that violence, and the plural forms that motivate it, require more than a belated sigh or an apathetic shrug—or an inchoate sputtering of shock. Violence requires that we interrogate it with a critical energy that not only seeks to understand its intentions, but in doing so, plots a path in which it is rendered less effective. This special issue thus insists that we examine not just violence per se, but what we take as violent feelings: the affective work that gives violence an intentionality that intersects the private and the public, the personal and the political. Against the backdrop of a present moment that feels weighted with violent feeling, this special issue examines literature and film to theorize the relationship between feeling and violence, the notion of feeling as violence, and the connection between affect, violence, and representational forms. Our interest in violent feelings is grounded in affect theory and its utility for understanding literature, film, and the arts—what theymean, how theywork, how theymove their audiences. We noticed that affect theorists often invoked violence as a metaphor for the mechanisms of affecting and being affected, but could do more to theorize such violence. We also noticed how recent scholarship on affect “turns on a set of shared terms: speed, violence, agitations, pressures, forces, intensities” (Brinkema xiii). While violence is often invoked as a shared term, as ametaphor for theway affects feel, the violence of affective exchange remains implicit in much of this recent work. The essays in this special issue of LITmake the relationship between violence and affect explicit, exploringnewquestions about emotion, embodiment, and representation. What is the relationship between violence represented in a text and the affective force enacted by a text? Must violence, by definition, be the infliction of physical
