Petrographic analyses of the substrate of a wall painting from a church at Sa’adon shed light on the under researched subject of the technique of execution of Byzantine wall paintings. The results suggest that the flawed execution of the substrates might be responsible for the low rate of preservation of murals from this period. Differences in the composition of the construction mortar and plaster show that the Byzantine craftspeople modified the properties of the renders accordingly to their function, a practice often attested in the Roman period but rarely demonstrated through archaeometric studies of Byzantine renders.
