What inspires someone to create a museum? While the foundation of many public museums includes private collections, museums established by an individual reflect a unique vision and passion that is integral to the museum’s identity and mission. Often, the personality of the founder is palpable and plays an ongoing role in shaping the visitor’s experience. In this issue, we focus on museums created by, or inspired by, founders with strong visions to explore the impact and legacy of that vision. Through a series of articles, representing a variety of museums, we argue that the unique challenges of “living with a founder’s vision” can be a catalyst for creativity, as museums design innovative ways to remain socially relevant and responsive to the needs of twenty-first-century audiences. We propose that the educational and interpretive initiatives inspired by the opportunities and constraints of working with a founder’s vision offer innovative models for finding “the art of relevance” crucial to the museum world today. The museums we profile range from institutions founded in the early twentieth century to the twenty-first century. Each highlights an issue that has resonance with contemporary concerns and issues: rethinking founders’ narratives to acknowledge complex intersections of wealth and patronage; building and welcoming new and often underserved audiences; addressing climate change and immigration. The Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Frick Collection, and Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, founded by collectors with enormous wealth, were established with a sense of public purpose and have their roots in the European tradition of private collections and art museums. Vizcaya Art and Gardens, built by industrialist James Deering in Miami Florida as a private winter retreat, also harkened back to grand European estates, but with a contemporary twist. Deering worked with an artistic director, Paul Chaflin, to commission site-specific contemporary works of art. The Tenement Museum, founded by Ruth Abram in 1988, was created to tell the stories of immigrants and promote tolerance. The Tenement Museum’s “collections” are tangible and intangible: the buildings that house the museum and the stories contained within. In this issue, Abram shares her personal story about becoming a museum founder.

Vizcaya Art and Gardens
