Abstract This study investigates disaster management practices in selected university libraries in Nigeria. A method using descriptive surveys was adopted for the study and its major findings revealed that there were no planned disaster management practices in place in the libraries that responded. Loss through theft, storm damage, computer crashes, pest infestation and vandalism all featured with a high level of occurrence. Common mitigating measures include: provision of fire extinguishers, air conditioning and security personnel. The study also revealed how acts of negligence, poor management vision and a lack of skills and training for library personnel were major factors affecting disaster management in university libraries. The study’s conclusion urges that adequate training of personnel, disaster preparedness and business continuity plans, as well as facilitating outreach programmes for library personnel, were the minimum measures recommended for disaster management preparedness.
