ABSTRACT According to a recent article published by Inside Higher Ed (2018), one-third of all students are taking at least one online class and without that option available, many colleges and universities would see their enrollment in decline. The question for those institutions that do not provide such an online offering is “where do we begin?” This becomes a complicated question when asking other faculty who have experience developing online courses since there is no standard method by which to design them. There are some important considerations and valuable tools that can be useful in deciding how to develop not only the first course, but all of those to follow. While this paper is geared toward an audience with no experience in online courses, there are elements that may be useful to anyone building or revising their curriculum.
