ABSTRACT

The purpose of this project was to examine the experiences of participants enrolled in a fee assistance program for recreation in Mississauga, Canada. Adults living in low income (N = 24) who were registered with ActiveAssist engaged in individual semi-structured interviews and data were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Benefits associated with ActiveAssist included affordable access to recreation, community involvement, and benefits for children and immigrants. Several barriers along with suggestions for improvement were also identified. Increasing communication about the program and partnering with other community initiatives appears vital to increasing access to recreation for individuals living in low income.
