Abstract: Though racial representation among top-billed actors in mainstream film is improving, serious Black heroes who speak African American vernacular English (AAVE) are still nearly nonexistent in these roles. Jamie Foxx's character Django from Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained may represent the only one in a successful, mainstream film in the twenty-first century. Unlike other characters who speak AAVE, Django is neither silly nor stupid. Tarantino expresses power through language in this character and others in the film, and Django's AAVE dialect is presented as equal in authority to the dialects of the film's white characters.
