Melodramatic Masculinity: Object Relations Theory in George Cukor's Keeper of the Flame (1942)

Abstract: This article offers a psychoanalytic interpretation of Keeper of the Flame (1942), George Cukor's melodrama pairing the legendary screen duo, Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. I adopt Melanie Klein's object relations theory as a lens because this film addresses an idealized and paranoid infantile male fantasy of womanhood.
