between these images, as they are promoted on TV, compared to how they have personally experienced them. It is worth noting that while both groups of interviewees expressed similar sentiments about racial issues, when looking at these same two groups, Rodríguez determined they differed in terms of their views about the degree to which US television has shaped their views about sex, birth control, smoking, and drinking, particularly with respect to differences in terms of these groups “consumption practices” (132). These interviews also looked at comparative attitudes about clothing and how media influences had a large effect on “clothing choices” (134). In fact, Rodríguez found that “the influence of US TV on clothing and style was by far the most mentioned by both groups” (134). Certainly, as Rodríguez argues not only in this section but throughout America, As Seen on TV: How Television Shapes Immigrant Expectations around the World, television is a dominant cultural export and does much to shape global attitudes about a range of issues. To be sure, it would be difficult to underestimate the significant role played by American television in terms of how innumerable people throughout the world view the US. While media scholars have long acknowledged the importance of television’s impact on immigrants’ perceptions about the US, Rodríguez’s research in this study delves more deeply into the specific ways television shows shape global attitudes. Of particular emphasis and import, Rodríguez demonstrates throughout her study that American television presents distorted views about race, class, and gender, which lead many who were born outside of the United States to develop unrealistic notions about American society and culture. Moreover, her study contributes to the increasingly important field of media studies because she includes an added layer by looking at US millennials side-by-side with the foreign born; thus, Rodríguez offers an interesting comparative analysis between the perceptions of these two different groups. For all of these reasons, Rodríguez’s examination is a welcome addition to the existing scholarship and works well as a way to further an important and ongoing dialogue about the role played by American TV in the global scene. Indeed, this monograph is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in media studies and would work particularly well in undergraduate and graduate classrooms as a way to convey the significant influence of American TV on global perceptions of the US.
