ABSTRACT Utilizing newspapers and manuscripts to examine the first conventions, this article further challenges the association of Jacksonianism with increasing democratization. The rise of democratization evident through the increased political engagement apparent in the conventions was not purely Jacksonian, instead manifesting itself in anti-Jacksonian political activity. The Anti-Masonic Party was first to hold a national convention, with the Democrats holding their convention last, following that of the National Republican Party, and simply nominating Martin Van Buren as Andrew Jackson’s running-mate. The advent of the Anti-Masonic and National Republican conventions demonstrate the existence of anti-Jacksonian democratization.
