undergraduate classes, depending on the topic. For instance, the chapter on Alger’s novels and newsboys would be most interesting to journalism history classes, whereas the chapter on Baum’s limited feminism in the Wizard of Oz would be more interesting to children’s literature or American studies classes. Meanwhile the chapter on Davis could lead to interesting ethical discussions about the role yellow journalism played in sparking the Spanish American War and that could be parlayed into the role of artifice in ethical newsgathering today. The chapter on the Chicago Defender could be interesting in a host of journalism history, children’s literature, sociology or race and ethnicity studies. The whole book, however, would only make sense to be assigned in a graduate program in children’s literature. It could never replace a more direct monograph on Gilded Age history as it overly relies on Frank Luther Mott and does not really crack the surface when it comes to journalism history. Additionally, one of my main critiques of this book is that each chapter feels too isolated—more like independent journal articles and not a cohesive whole. Rather than summarizing her argument, Gray goes into a new example in the conclusion, one forty-plus years later than the rest of the monograph. It would have been better to see Gray tie together the various threads in a more cohesive manner. Overall this slim book (138 pages, including Front Matter) contributes to the field by showcasing how Golden Age children’s literature picked up and critiqued the dominant themes of Gilded Age journalism, enabling readers to see how journalism shaped the broader late nineteenth and early twentieth-century culture.
