Jodi Kim is Associate Professor of Media and Cultural Studies at the University of California, Riverside. She is the author of Ends of Empire: Asian American Critique and the Cold War (University of Minnesota Press, 2010) and co-editor of Critical Ethnic Studies: A Reader (Duke University Press, 2016).
Grace Kyungwon Hong is Professor in the Department of Asian American Studies and the Department of Gender Studies at UCLA. She is the author of Death Beyond Disavowal: The Impossible Politics of Difference (University of Minnesota Press, 2015) and The Ruptures of American Capital: Women of Color Feminism and the Culture of Immigrant Labor (University of Minnesota Press, 2006), and the co-editor (with Roderick A. Iyko Day is Associate Professor of English and Critical Social Thought at Mount Holyoke College and Co-Chair of the Five College Asian/Pacific/American Studies Program. She is the author of Alien Capital: Asian Racialization and the Logic of Settler Colonial Capitalism (2016).
Mariam B. Lam is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Southeast Asian Studies and Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of California, Riverside. This forum represents one stage of an ongoing conversation between Jodi Kim, Grace Hong, Mariam Lam, and Iyko Day about the intersection of Cold War geopolitics, postwar redress cultures, settler colonialism, and transpacific studies. It is inspired by Lisa Yoneyama’s Cold War Ruins: Transpacific Critique of American Justice and Japanese War Crimes, winner of the 2018 Association for Asian American Studies Best Book Award for Humanities and Cultural Studies. The ideas presented here were developed on two panels in 2017, the first at the International Convention of Asia Scholars Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and later at the American Studies Association meeting in Chicago, Illinois, with Lisa Yoneyama responding. This forum follows an author-meets-critics format, with individual contributions followed by concluding reflections by Yoneyama.
