ABSTRACT Cecil John Rhodes arrived in South Africa in 1870 with “weak lungs” and very little money. He died of an aneurysm 32 years later, at 48, in his seaside cottage in Muizenberg. In the interim he became a very wealthy man. It is this creation of wealth and what he did with it that has aroused so many of the controversies surrounding Rhodes.
