ABSTRACT This article re-examines Charles Baudelaire’s poetry and his reputation for obscenity in the context of the rise of nude photography in France in the 1850s. It argues that, despite being accused of obscenity in 1857, Baudelaire was reacting against, rather than participating in, the rapid evolution of representational techniques, particularly those of the body, that came about with the invention of photography. In response to photography, Baudelaire uses metaphor to recover the naked poetic body from the obscene photograph’s threat of non-signification.
