This summer, the online journal 19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century published a bumper crop of interrelated material which is essential reading for all those whose interests lie in the study of women, writing and art history. Titled Old Masters, Modern Women the volume considerably expands the available material on women writers on art in the long nineteenth century, and includes work by several of the current authorities in this area — Hilary Fraser, Julie Sheldon and Meaghan Clarke — and a dozen other researchers some of whom have published their PhD research. The range of the long nineteenth century frames a period when what we would now recognize as art historical writing was associated less with universities and museums and more with ritualized travel (the Grand Tour) and writing for a thriving commercial press. That significant numbers of women contributed to literary production in nineteenth century England is well known particularly in relation to the study of the novel; this publication is an attempt to broaden the recognition of women’s contribution to the evolving discourses of art criticism and art history during the period. Most of the essays are focussed around the output of one or two authors, and Old Masters, Modern Women comprises in addition to the main contents, a series of short biographical essays on some of the key authors studied: the best known include Mary Berenson (d. 1945), Elizabeth Eastlake (d. 1893), Anna Jameson (d. 1860) and Maria, Lady Calcott (d. 1842). The special issue is itself, then, a kind of biographical compendium Maria Alambritis, Susanna Avery-Quash and Hilary Fraser, eds, ‘Old Masters, Modern Women’, Special Issue of 19: Interdisciplinary Studies in the Long Nineteenth Century, 28, 2019, 10.16995/ntn.857
