ABSTRACT

Comparatively, the source base for twelfth- and thirteenth-century Wales, the era known as the Age of Princes, is remarkable in its limitations—both the survival rate of material and women’s appearances are circumscript. Nevertheless, a concept of native queenship can clearly be deciphered. This article discusses how the political agency of Joan of England, the Anglo-Norman wife of the most powerful ruler of medieval Wales, is reflective of her status and office as queen in a Welsh context.
