In May 1768 Lieutenant Zachary Hicks joined His Majesty's Bark Endeavour under the command of Lieutenant James Cook. For the next 3 years, as the Endeavour circumnavigated the world, Hicks represented Cook to local governors and chiefs, he led expeditions, observed the transit of Venus at Tahiti and, whenever Cook was on shore, Hicks was in charge of the ship. In April 1770 he was the first to sight Australia and Cook named Point Hicks after him. The 250^th anniversary of this event in 2020 and the 250^th commemoration of Hicks's death in 2021 is an appropriate time to draw attention to his Journal.
