Introduction

The Denpasar Kolektif (DenKol) is a punk collective of friends on Bali, Indonesia, who organise a myriad of events, from music to art, and activism – motivated by the ideals of friendship and solidarity, diversity, anti‐consumerism and mutual respect. And if you drove by the basecamp of DenKol between May and September 2020, you might have seen the following set‐up:11 At the time of publication, the Punk Pangan events were taking place semi‐regularly, around once a week. two long tables arranged in the driveway, both filled to the brim with vegetables, eggs, rice, oil, tofu and tempeh. Behind the table, a punk in a heavily adorned battle‐vest. An Antifa‐patch above his heart, smiling under his mask, he hands out vegetables together with his friends. ‘Punk Pangan’ or ‘Punk Food’ is a food bank service in which DenKol members hand out cooking staples. The collective started this food distribution service for those financially affected by the crisis, and pay most of the supplied groceries out of their own pockets. At the events, there are posters alluding to different political issues that DenKol addresses in their common works. Among them, racism, the new omnibus law,22 This ‘massive and problematic bill’ (Hosen et al. 2020) is set to make business and land acquisition processes easier for investors, for example by reducing corporate income tax. mining permits and the reclamation of Benoa Bay in Bali.33 As the months progressed in 2020, DenKol additionally urged mandatory coronavirus rapid tests, and the arrest of notorious drummer Jerinx of the Balinese punk band Superman Is Dead. In the following, I would like to emphasise how this food distribution is a solidarisation with the Balinese rakyat, the people, whose interests have frequently been bypassed on account of the prioritisation of the profitable tourism industry. DenKol highlights that the government’s response to the Covid crisis once again strikes those the hardest, who are most affected by the climate crisis – which in part is worsened by the tourism industry's demands on the island.
