The analysis in our manuscript allows explaining two long-standing mysteries in ultrafast laser physics. First, experimentally observed pulse shapes of few-cycle oscillators showed stark deviations from the theoretically expected hyperbolic secants. Second, there were numerous reports on "magic" self-modelocking without saturable absorber mechanism. All these observations defied theoretical predictions. Our frequency-domain approach for using the Haus master equation allows explaining many peculiar findings that have given rise to numerous controversial discussions.
