Determination of the In Situ Elastic Properties of a Railway Roadbed by Seismic Observations

Abstract

The paper demonstrates the possibility of determining of the elastic parameters of a railway roadbed from the results of seismic observations of vibrations generated by a passing train. The rationale for the monitoring method is obtained by analyzing our own experimental data and theoretical calculations with good agreement between theory and experiment. As the method part, we considered the requirements for seismic equipment and indicated the most suitable types (Trillium Compact-120s is the best), which can be located near the roadbed at a safe distance from it. Such a sensor with a suitable data logger and seismic data processing program can be included in the set of methods for state railway roadbed monitoring. These assessments of the resolution of the proposed method show that it is sufficiently sensitive to detect the deformation of soil properties at the early degradation stage, which is especially important for permafrost soils.
