The ordering of organic conjugated polymer molecules is a hot topic in the strategy formulation for high-performance organic devices design. This review aims to highlight the issues that can help to optimize the properties of donor-acceptor alternating copolymers, which are crucial for the development of functional organic devices. The chemical design rules of both backbone and side-chains, the correlation between electronic structure and thin film microstructure, the thin film characterization methods and optimizing thin film deposition techniques are included.
