On behalf of the Annals of Human Genetics (The Annals), we would like to reinforce the fact that this journal offers fair and rigorous editorial evaluation of all original research submissions. After the initial editorial evaluation, a manuscript will either be returned to the author with comments or it will be sent for external peer‐review to at least two anonymous reviewers, for rigorous scientific evaluation.

As stated on the journal's website (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14691809), the principal aim of The Annals is to increase understanding of the causes and consequences of human genetic variation, particularly in relation to health, disease and evolution. The Annals was founded in 1925 and follows a long tradition of welcoming high‐quality manuscripts that provide original data and/or analysis, Review articles, and methodological papers.

During the course of editorial evaluation and peer review, The Annals normally rejects a significant proportion of its submissions. Our rejection decisions – whether made by the Editor‐in‐Chief upon initial editorial triage or following an external peer review process – are made with great deliberation. The Annals does not discriminate on the basis of national origin of its submitting authors. Editorial decisions are made purely on the basis of the quality of scientific content and whether the work falls within the stated aims and scope of the journal. The Annals also follows closely the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE; https://publicationethics.org/) and abides by any legal and regulatory requirements in place.

We hereby wish to address the recent actions of the former Editor‐in‐Chief of The Annals, Prof. David Curtis, who in mid‐December 2020 rejected without peer review a number of submitted manuscripts for reasons that were not consistent with the journal's high editorial standards. The actions of Prof. Curtis did not represent journal policy, nor did they represent the views of others involved in the management of the journal. We have contacted the authors of the wrongly rejected submissions and will reconsider their manuscripts.

Prof. Curtis is no longer involved in any way with the Annals of Human Genetics.
