Spatially decoupled 8-port box shaped MIMO DRA with quad-directional pattern diversity

ABSTRACT

In this study, a spatially separated eight-port box shaped multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) cylindrical dielectric resonator antenna (cDRA) is presented which supports quad-directional pattern diversity characteristics. Initially, a cDRA is radiated with the assistance of two different excitation mechanisms to generate decoupled orthogonal modes. This dual-port primary structure is combined with a similar primary structure in a box-shaped manner to yield an eight-port MIMO antenna system. The antenna elements (Dielectric Resonators) are located in such a way that each antenna element can able to excite in diverse directions to achieve spatially separated radiated beams. Two different isolation improvement mechanisms are applied within the structure (i) excitation of decoupled orthogonal modes; (ii) spatially decoupled radiation pattern. With these dual techniques, the presented MIMO antenna can able to deliver better than 20 dB of isolation between the antenna elements without using any extra decoupling structure.
