Simulation and data analysis of a portable tagged neutron system for detection of explosives hidden in packages

A portable removable detection device was developed based on the tagged neutron method with ING-27 neutron generator and two LYSO gamma detectors. This system was designed to detect explosives hidden in the package with strong interferences such as milk powder and detergent. The structure design of the system was modeled and calculated by using the MCNP5 code. The gamma spectra were tested and simulated for ~300 g TNT, ~300 g ammonium nitrate, ~400 g milk powder, and ~400 g detergent in the package, respectively. The experimental measurements and simulation calculations were carried out on the gamma spectra of the four combinations (Milk powder + TNT, Milk powder + AMM, Detergent + TNT, Detergent + AMM) in the package. The comparison between the simulated result and the experimental data is in a good agreement. The experimental data were analyzed to identify different samples. The effect of the selection of the time window on the gamma spectra was also compared. Principal component analysis was used to distinguish explosives from non-explosives in luggage.
