Automated low-cost setup for optical and E-field records of lightning

Lightning discharges can be detected by their electromagnetic field radiation, they can be heard for close distances (up to 20 km or so) because of the shockwaves produced by the fast expansion of the air around the plasma channel, and they can be seen by the radiation that they produced in the visible spectrum. In order to have a complete picture of this natural phenomenon, scientists around the world combine different measurements (electromagnetic fields and optical measurements) in their analyses and investigations. We developed a low-cost and automated setup for a simultaneous record of lightning E-fields and lightning images for lightning research. The setup combines an E-field antenna, a triggering circuit, a GPS engine, a digital storage system, and a smartphone to take lightning pictures.
