A cost‐effective electronic lighting driver with high‐power‐factor and soft‐switching for supplying an LED street‐light lamp

As a street‐lighting source, LED has the characteristics of energy saving and environmental protection and it plays an important role in replacing traditional high‐energy‐consumption high‐pressure mercury lamps. This paper designs and accomplishes a cost‐effective LED driver featuring high‐power‐factor and soft‐switching for use in energy‐efficient streetlights. The LED driver proposed in this paper merges a totem‐pole bridgeless boost (TPBB) converter with power‐factor correction (PFC) and a half‐bridge series‐resonant (HBSR) converter with a bridge rectifier into a single‐stage power‐conversion circuit. Besides, the presented LED driver attains high power‐factor of the utility‐line source and an advantageous zero‐voltage switching (ZVS) feature on power switches. Moreover, a prototype circuit is designed and carried out to provide a 165 W (235 V/0.7 A)‐rated LED street‐light lamp with a utility‐line voltage of 110 V. Satisfyingly experimental results have demonstrated that high power factor, low utility‐line current total‐harmonic‐distortion (THD), and high circuit efficiency are achieved in the presented cost‐effective LED driver suitable for energy‐saving street‐lighting applications.
