Rapid Screening Method in the Identification of 17 Adulterants in Dietary Supplements

There are several promises on the market related to the consumption of dietary supplements such as health benefits, improvements in body performance, combating aging and weight loss. One of the risks to consumers of dietary supplements is related to adulteration by substances that can cause adverse health reactions. The aim of this study was to develop a qualitative screening method for the detection of substances with pharmacological properties: stimulants, anorectic and diuretics in dietary supplement samples. A spectral database, using the following analytical techniques: molecular absorption spectroscopy in the UV and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) regions, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS), was created to compare the chromatograms of the samples and the standards searched. Two columns were tested, Ace® and Phenomenex®, and the result was compared for the screening methods developed separately for each column. The Phenomenex® column was chosen for the sample analysis using HPLC–DAD.
