In 2018, two aircraft from the Miramar-based Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing flew over the Salton Sea, California’s largest inland body of water occupying the desert area of Imperial and Riverside Counties. Midair, the pilots decided to pull a prank. As the Navy Times reported on the incident, not bothering to contain their glee, “high over the Mad Max-ian wasteland that is California’s Salton Sea,” the pilots used their planes to draw “a sky penis, appearing to nestle … in the bosom of the Chocolate Mountains.”11 The radar image was tweeted out by a civilian monitor, garnering thousands of engagements from Twitter users and prompting coverage from the Navy Times as well as a number of other outlets (figure 1).22 A military contractor blog commented that when the pilots “penetrate[d] the Salton Sea” it had “yet to be confirmed that the sky was able to give consent.”33
