Electrocatalytic properties of pulse plated Ni-W alloy coatings in alkaline electrolytes

ABSTRACT Ni-W electrodes with differing tungsten content as electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) were prepared by pulse plating. The structural and morphological characterisations of the electrodes were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), respectively. The electrocatalytic activity for the HER has been evaluated using chronopotentiometry, cathodic polarisation, and cyclic voltammetry techniques. Addition of tungsten in the electrode contributes to enhancement of electrocatalytic performance by the degree of increased amorphisation of structure.
