Many in the information industry are able to work from home thanks to technologies that did not exist not long ago. The technologies we rely on, even proprietary ones, are built on a foundation of internet and web standards that we take for granted and may not even be aware of. The progress of technology over the past few decades is a story of ever‐increasing interoperability. The web standards from the W3C are open; free of cost; free of intellectual property claims; and have been developed to take accessibility, internationalization, security, privacy, and alignment with the W3C Web Technical Architecture into account. Our pivot to the demands of the post‐COVID era will be enabled by free, open standards and the new tools and technologies that will be based on them.
