1 INTRODUCTION

The late Bernhard Statzner made a very strong contribution to the field of stream ecology and to this journal in particular. He published 25 of his papers in Freshwater Biology, both coordinated and edited two special issues (1994, 2015) in this journal, and was also a dedicated reviewer. We recognise this legacy with a memorial Virtual Special Issue (which can be found at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal/13652427/homepage/virtual_issues.htm) that brings together 15 of these papers that represent the diversity of research topics he covered and that had impact (in its genuine sense) on the field. There are, of course, many papers published elsewhere, and we refer to these as appropriate. This should help the reader trace the development of the ideas he put forward, some of which represent the foundation of active contemporary themes and all of which illustrate his very individual thinking and opinions. We begin with a brief resumé of his scientific life, then group his papers into a number of research themes, seeking to place the Special Issue and his work into a wider scientific context.
