Methylcyclohexene and Methylcyclohexadiene Dehydrogenation–Hydrogenation over Pt/Al 2 O 3 Catalyst

The dehydrogenation of 1-methylcyclohexene (MCHe) and 1-methyl-1,4-cyclohexadiene (MCHde) was studied over an in-house 1.0 wt% Pt/γ-Al2O3 catalyst. For the comparison purpose, the dehydrogenation of methylcyclohexane (MCH) was also studied. The experiments were performed in a fixed bed reactor and within a temperature range of 220 °C to 380 °C. The reactor pressure was maintained at 1.013 and 5 bar, and the H2-to-HC molar ratio was set between 0 and 8.4. Under the conditions of experimentation, both the dehydrogenation and the hydrogenation reactions were found to take place with MCHe and MCHde. The presence of hydrogen in the feed was observed to facilitate the dehydrogenation reaction. For equimolar H2/HC ratio, 320 °C reactor temperature, 1.013 bar, and W/FHC0 equals to ~ 6.0 × 104 s·g-cat/mol-HC, the yield of toluene obtained was 62.3, 82.9, and 99.6 mol/mol % for the reactants MCH, MCHe, and MCHde, respectively. Equilibrium constant expression for the dehydrogenation–hydrogenation reaction of MCHe was also worked out.
